More about Futura 2000
From New York graffiti to galleries
Born Leonard Hilton McGurr in New York in 1955, Futura expanded the language of graffiti through abstraction, fine spray-painted lines and dynamic fields of colour. His work moved beyond lettering to explore movement and space.
His abstract subway piece Break dates from 1980. In 1981, his work appeared in New York / New Wave at MoMA PS1, during a period when artists including Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat were reshaping the relationship between street culture and galleries.
Pointman, music and collaborations
Pointman translates Futura’s visual language into a sculptural character with an elongated head and a robotic body. Its futuristic silhouette is recognisable even without the artist’s abstract marks.
Futura created artwork for The Clash and painted during the band’s performances. Collaborations with Nike, BAPE and BMW brought his work into music, fashion and design.
AV-001LV at ArtComburo
The AV-001LV Pointman sculpture combines a black body with red illumination. In daylight its outline takes centre stage; with the light switched on, the object takes on a different presence.
