More about Popkapi
An artist from Bangkok
Popkapi is the name used by Bangkok artist Jakkrit Chewapanya. His practice encompasses painting, sculpture and graphic design. In an Onarto interview, he describes an interest in animals, spontaneous drawings and characters related to his own appearance. The process matters: colour and line allow a work to develop without an entirely predetermined narrative.
The portrait as a layered image
Popkapi’s faces are built from colour planes, sharp contours, large eyes and small marks. Individual fragments can appear incompatible, yet come together as a distinct character from a distance. Up close, the portrait becomes a network of lines again. This shifting relationship encourages repeated viewing and attention to different connections within the image.

Rhythms of the Primordial World*
Large eyes and flowing lines form a dense Popkapi composition, revealing smaller marks and colour connections up close.
Pop Kapi
Through Layers of Colour*
A Popkapi face emerges through pink, yellow and blue areas. Layers of lines keep the portrait open to changing readings.
