More about Takashi Murakami
Takashi Murakami and Superflat
Murakami develops Superflat, an approach in which Japanese artistic traditions meet manga, anime and contemporary consumer culture. Bright colours and flat graphics have an artistic context, connecting museum art with everyday visual imagery. His work 727 belongs to MoMA’s collection, and the Superflat exhibition took place at MOCA in 2001.
Mr. DOB, flowers and works in the collection
Mr. DOB is one of Murakami’s most recognisable characters. DOB-Kun figures retain round ears and large eyes, while DOBtopus transforms the character into a fantastic tentacled creature. Compare DOBtopus A and DOBtopus B: these are different compositions rather than simply different colours.
Korin prints reveal another aspect of the artist’s practice: decorative motifs and Japanese painting traditions. Flower Pillow brings his recognisable flower shape into a soft three-dimensional object. These formats allow a collection centred on one artist while retaining diverse images and materials.
Louis Vuitton and Billie Eilish collaborations
Takashi Murakami began working with Louis Vuitton in 2003, reinterpreting the brand’s monogram through his own palette and characters. Louis Vuitton revisited the collaboration with a collection reissue in 2025. Another example of his art entering pop culture is the UNIQLO UT collection with Billie Eilish, introduced in 2020.
These projects help explain the reach of Murakami’s artistic language. Examine the works presented here through their own titles and edition details; mentioning fashion collaborations does not mean their products are included in this selection.
