CHUM Black

CHUM Black is a collectible vinyl KAWS art toy with a rounded, segmented body. The character stands with feet wide apart and hands on hips, elbows pointing outwards. This stance conveys confidence and distinguishes CHUM from the artist’s more contemplative characters. Cross-shaped eyes and details at the sides of the head belong to KAWS’s recognisable visual language. CHUM has a distinctive personality without any additional props.

CHUM’s history and anniversary release

The first CHUM figure was released in 2002. For the character’s twentieth anniversary, KAWS brought it back in five colours; sales on KAWSONE began on 9 August 2022. The segmented silhouette recalls the Michelin Man, while the cross-shaped eyes and head shape bring that familiar image into the artist’s world.

Open Edition and MEDICOM TOY

MEDICOM TOY identifies this release as CHUM Open Edition and confirms five versions: White, Black, Pink, Yellow and Orange. It is not a numbered edition with a stated run of 500 figures. Collectors should distinguish the early release from the character’s return in 2022: these are different editions that retain the familiar design. This card presents the anniversary release.

Features of Black

Black emphasises the continuous silhouette and highlights on its rounded segments. The cross-shaped eyes remain part of the sculpted head, without a bright colour contrast. Side lighting reveals the arms, divisions of the torso and the position of the palms. This palette suits a monochrome collection or a standalone accent on a pale shelf.

Collecting and gifting

CHUM Black can be a standalone object or part of a collection of KAWS characters. Five colours allow a comparison of how the same form changes with its palette. When choosing a gift, consider the recipient’s taste and interest in contemporary art: restrained versions fit easily into neutral interiors, while bright colours make a noticeable accent. Leave space beside the figure so its outward elbows and hands-on-hips pose remain visible. The front photograph helps assess proportions and this specific colour.
