CLONE X #5 — Chris Le (CLEGFX)

CLONE X #5 — Chris Le (CLEGFX) is a silver-accented offset print by Takashi Murakami from the CLONE X series. A character wearing a large headpiece with a broad toothed grin fills the centre. Flowers, multicoloured eyes and a ribbon-like tongue combine with the face’s three-dimensional-looking modelling.

A pale background emphasises the metallic-looking headpiece and dark outlines of the grin. Small flowers beside the face repeat Murakami’s familiar motif, while pink, blue and yellow accents unite the character’s details.

Unlike flower prints, this work centres attention on a single face. It can interest collectors drawn to digital culture, character art and Murakami’s characteristic shifts from friendly smiles to the grotesque.

CLONE X: RTFKT, NFTs and the Gagosian exhibition

CLONE X developed from the NFT project Takashi Murakami created with RTFKT Studios in 2021. Its digital avatars were conceived as three-dimensional characters incorporating the artist’s motifs. This history explains the modelled face, fantastic details and combination of flowers with digital aesthetics in the print.

In 2022, Murakami brought CLONE X imagery into physical art. An Arrow through History at Gagosian in New York presented hand-painted portraits and large sculptures based on NFT avatars. Running from 11 May to 25 June, the exhibition connected the digital world with a gallery setting.

The portrait’s title refers to Chris Le (CLEGFX), a co-founder of RTFKT. Takashi Murakami’s physical offset print brings the CLONE X avatar into a collection alongside his other works.
