FAMILY Brown Blue White

FAMILY Brown Blue White is a collectible KAWS set in which COMPANION, BFF and CHUM form a family group. Larger characters stand behind smaller ones, while a small COMPANION holds another CHUM. The artist’s familiar figures work together, drawing the eye from individual characters to their gestures and closeness.

FAMILY: three characters and a family portrait

The composition depicts five figures representing three characters. This does not mean five separate objects in the set: the smallest CHUM is held by the small COMPANION. Cross-shaped eyes, rounded forms and different scales unite the group, while gestures suggest support and kinship.

Brown COMPANION figures, blue BFF and white CHUM

Large and small brown COMPANION figures stand beside blue BFF and white CHUM. Pale gloves, faces and eyes add contrast, while BFF’s yellow nose provides a small accent. In this version, colour immediately distinguishes the characters and draws attention to their interaction.

From collectible figures to museum sculpture

FAMILY appeared in 2021: MEDICOM TOY documents sales of the Brown / Blue / White and Black versions in November that year. The manufacturer presents Grey / Pink / Fluoro Pink as a separate colour version. This matters when collecting: a shared composition name brings together several editions without making them identical.

The bronze FAMILY of 2021 became the central work of the exhibition organised by the Art Gallery of Ontario and later shown at SFMOMA. The museum describes the COMPANION, BFF and CHUM group as a family portrait exploring closeness and vulnerability. The collectible set on this page is a different format of the composition; the museum bronze’s specifications do not apply to it.

Collecting and gifting

Brian Donnelly, known as KAWS, moved from graffiti and the reinterpretation of advertising into painting, sculpture and art toys. In FAMILY, he gathers his characters into a scene that can suggest family, friendship or connections between different personalities. Their interaction distinguishes the work from a standalone COMPANION or BFF.

The set can complement a collection of character-based art or become a gift for someone drawn to KAWS and family relationships. Compare photographs before choosing a colour: restrained Black emphasises silhouettes, Brown / Blue / White separates characters by colour, and Pink / Grey adds bright pink accents.
