BE@RBRICK Van Gogh Museum Almond Blossom 400% + 100%

Almond Blossom carries the white almond flowers and blue sky of Vincent van Gogh’s painting onto BE@RBRICK figures. The artist painted the work in 1890 as a gift to his brother Theo and his wife following their son’s birth. In the Van Gogh Museum collaboration, branches and flowers surround a three-dimensional form rather than a rectangular canvas, giving the familiar composition a different scale and rhythm. The official 100% + 400% set was scheduled for January 2023;1890 dates the painting, not the figures.

Collaboration and design

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter whose approach to colour and brushwork helped shape modern art. The collaboration between MEDICOM TOY and the Van Gogh Museum carries details from his paintings onto a three-dimensional form. It is a contemporary collectible based on a painting, rather than an original work by the artist or a paper print. Turning the figure reveals different parts of the composition, replacing a single frontal image with a sequence of coloured surfaces.

Compare front and rear views to see how fragments of the painting are distributed around the volume. The museum’s attribution is useful for understanding the original artwork.
