HOLIDAY SPACE Black

HOLIDAY SPACE Black is a collectible KAWS figure featuring COMPANION in an astronaut suit. It stands with its hands covering its face; the rounded head details and familiar gesture remain recognisable even in this new outfit. The dark glossy surface highlights the suit’s relief and contours. The space theme meets human vulnerability: the figure can be read as a traveller far from a familiar world.

KAWS:HOLIDAY SPACE and the stratospheric flight

In August 2020, KAWS and AllRightsReserved presented the fifth stop of KAWS:HOLIDAY. COMPANION in an astronaut suit travelled on a sounding balloon into the stratosphere, reaching 41.5 km. A panoramic camera recorded the journey. The project marked the character’s twentieth anniversary and offered an experience that could be watched at home during restrictions on public gatherings. SPACE is the project’s artistic title; the documented flight altitude lies within Earth’s atmosphere.

The Black version

The dark glossy surface gives the figure a more restrained appearance than Gold and Silver. Light reveals the folds, chest panel and equipment behind the shoulders. Black retains mirror-like reflections: against a light background, the outline of the suit and the hands beside the face are especially clear. The colour name describes the appearance of the finish; the edition’s main material is polyurethane.
