Lampman

Lampman is a vinyl and mixed-media lamp sculpture by Joan Cornellà, released in an edition of 300. A character with a lampshade in place of a head holds an electrical socket and brings two fingers towards it. An everyday object becomes part of the artist’s dark humour.

Replacing the head with a lampshade makes the silhouette immediately recognisable. The socket and hand gesture introduce an uncomfortable, deliberately absurd situation. It is a sculptural subject rather than advice on using electricity. The light runs on a CR2025 battery; the object does not need connecting to the socket depicted in the character’s hand. By day it reads as a figure and in the evening as an intimate light accent.
