Let’s Checkmate

THE MONSTERS LABUBU Let’s Checkmate is a collectible POP MART vinyl plush doll featuring Kasing Lung’s character. Brown fur, a smooth face and long ears combine with the attributes of a fairy-tale monarch: a golden crown, red robe and white collar. The shell is made from polyester, PVC and ABS, with soft polyester and PP-pellet filling.

The name Let’s Checkmate refers to the chess term. The theme is legible without literally turning LABUBU into a chess piece: the crown sits beside the ears, a velvet-like red cape reveals pale paws, and the formal costume contrasts with a mischievous toothy smile. Large blue eyes, rosy cheeks and a small red nose keep the character recognisable.

Differences in texture are important in this version. The fluffy head and body frame a smooth face, folds in the white collar add lightness, and the shiny crown becomes the brightest detail. Even seated, the design has a distinct silhouette, with two ears and a small crown rising above the rounded head.

Kasing Lung and THE MONSTERS

Artist and illustrator Kasing Lung created THE MONSTERS in 2015 through books inspired by Nordic fairy tales. LABUBU is one of its characters: behind a mischievous appearance is a kind-hearted creature whose attempts to help do not always go as planned. The contrast between sharp teeth and a gentle nature gives the character particular expressiveness. Learn about the artist in the official POP MART profile of Kasing Lung.
