HOLIDAY SHANGHAI Black

HOLIDAY SHANGHAI Black is a vinyl KAWS art toy: COMPANION lies on its back with one leg bent, embracing the Moon. Instead of an everyday object, its hands hold a cratered sphere. Familiar X eyes and rounded palms make the character recognisable, but the Moon establishes the mood of the composition. The scene can be read as a quiet moment of rest or an attempt to bring something unreachable closer.

KAWS:HOLIDAY in Shanghai

Shanghai was the eleventh stop of KAWS:HOLIDAY. The installation was presented on the North Bund from 29 August to 1 September 2024 with AllRightsReserved. A large COMPANION held the Moon; illumination made the night-time image an important part of the event. The collectible figure conveys this scene on an intimate scale.

A Moon that glows in the dark

All three colour versions have a glow-in-the-dark lunar element. Its material glows in darkness; this is not an electric lamp. The box graphics also have a special glowing finish. Separate photographs show the figure and packaging in darkness, allowing you to explore the effect before buying. The character’s body should not be understood as an entirely luminous object.

The Black version

The black body and palms combine with yellow X eyes and a pale Moon. This version most clearly contrasts the dark silhouette with the lunar sphere. In light, the lines of the arms and surface relief are visible; in darkness, the glowing element takes the focus. Give Black a little space of its own so that its silhouette remains clear.

For a collection or a gift

HOLIDAY SHANGHAI Black can join a KAWS collection or become an unusual gift for someone interested in contemporary art. Its connection to an actual urban installation gives it a story worth sharing. The horizontal composition reads clearly on an open shelf or table: leave room in front so that the hands and Moon remain visible. Compare the daylight photographs to choose a colour, and use the night views to explore the glow.
