About Brillo
BE@RBRICK Andy Warhol Brillo 1000% is a MEDICOM TOY collectible based on Warhol’s Brillo Boxes. Red-and-blue Brillo logos and packaging typography cover a white body, continuing across the head, torso and limbs. A familiar commercial design moves from rectangular packaging onto the rounded BE@RBRICK form.
Warhol presented Brillo Boxes in 1964. His painted and screenprinted wooden constructions resembled commercial cartons and were stacked in New York’s Stable Gallery like goods in a warehouse. Bringing this everyday packaging into an exhibition questioned how context changes the way an object is perceived.
Here, the box shape is replaced by MEDICOM TOY’s bear-shaped platform. Lettering, coloured bands and fragments of packaging form a continuous pattern across separate body sections. The large format makes the shifts in typography easy to compare from different sides.
The edition credits the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and identifies Brillo as a trademark of the Armaly Sponge Company. Warhol is the artist whose packaging-based work provides the motif; MEDICOM TOY produces the later collectible. His broader interest in advertising, celebrity and serial repetition connects this figure with the Marilyn Monroe and Elvis editions.
