BE@RBRICK mastermind JAPAN Costume Ver. 400%

The black mastermind JAPAN Costume Ver. replaces BE@RBRICK’s usual smooth exterior with a textured costume. A white skull and crossbones on the chest and a pale muzzle create a clear contrast. Texture does much of the work in this monochrome design, softening the impression of the joints and giving the silhouette extra volume. This is the separate Costume Ver., rather than a standard printed logo release. MEDICOM TOY announced it for September 2024.

Collaboration and design

Here MEDICOM TOY works with the visual language of clothing: an emblem, a colour scheme and a particular surface. The familiar bear shape makes the collaborator’s decisions easy to compare with other releases. It connects Japanese designer toys with streetwear, where a handful of recognisable details can carry a brand’s identity. Leaving some space around the figure helps those details remain legible rather than competing with neighbouring objects on a crowded shelf.
