BE@RBRICK Raphael Chrome Ver. 400% + 100%

Raphael Chrome Ver. refers to the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television animation. A reflective green body is paired with a red mask, yellow front shell and an R belt buckle. The mirrored finish changes the cartoon’s familiar flat palette while retaining Raphael’s key identifiers. This is a chrome interpretation of the character rather than a realistic turtle sculpture. MEDICOM TOY scheduled the official 100% + 400% set for May 2023, distinguishing it from later screen versions of the Ninja Turtles.

Collaboration and design

Translating an animated character onto the BE@RBRICK platform changes its proportions while retaining its most important cues: facial expression, colour and clothing details. MEDICOM TOY works with those recognisable signs rather than literally reproducing the on-screen model. Placing the object beside an illustration makes the design decisions especially clear: some details remain, while others give way to the bear shape. It also connects a personal attachment to animation with a collection of designer figures.
