BE@RBRICK SpongeBob Gold Chrome 400% + 100%

SpongeBob Gold Chrome turns the yellow SpongeBob SquarePants character into a mirrored gold-toned BE@RBRICK. Large blue eyes, a two-toothed smile, a white shirt and red tie retain his personality. Brown shorts provide the lower colour accent. Stephen Hillenburg created the original character; MEDICOM TOY adapts the animated design in collaboration with rights holder Nickelodeon/Viacom. The official 100% + 400% set was announced for January 2020. Gold Chrome describes the finish, rather than a figure made from gold.

Collaboration and design

Translating an animated character onto the BE@RBRICK platform changes its proportions while retaining its most important cues: facial expression, colour and clothing details. MEDICOM TOY works with those recognisable signs rather than literally reproducing the on-screen model. Placing the object beside an illustration makes the design decisions especially clear: some details remain, while others give way to the bear shape. It also connects a personal attachment to animation with a collection of designer figures.
