A collaboration with Basquiat’s artistic legacy

Basquiat worked with painting, words and signs: fragments of text and symbols in his work did more than decorate a background; they created a rhythm of their own. This release brings that visual language into three dimensions. The rounded helmet and spacesuit details become parts of a single graphic composition.

Kenny Wong created MOLLY, and POP MART manufactures the figure. The artistic collaboration draws on Basquiat’s legacy, giving his approach to words and colour a new scale and volume. The interest lies in this change of medium, as graphic motifs move from a flat surface onto the astronaut’s form.

Yellow gloves and red boots frame the colourful body. A crown, text fragments and a drawn head appear on the chest, while silver-coloured tubes emphasise the spacesuit’s construction. Clear colour accents combine with complex graphics that can be explored from different sides.

Hong Kong artist Kenny Wong created MOLLY in 2006. Large eyes and distinctively pursed lips convey her independent, focused character. The space-themed design retains this recognisable face while giving artistic collaborations a new surface to work with.
